Class: Modern Approaches to Literature, aka "the theory class"
Assignment: Prepare a 10-15 minute oral report, plus a one-page written summary, of "The Mode of Existence of a Literary Work of Art" from René Wellek & Austin Warren's
Theory of Literature.
What would you do?
I bet I know what you
wouldn't do; you wouldn't cast aside the assignment above and instead write a
poem (a dreadful poem, at that) on ... gah, I don't even know what it was all about. Not
René Wellek or "The Mode of Existence of a Literary Work of Art," that's for sure.
